My True Encounter with the Ghost of C.C. White

Pick up any book on Midwest ghost stories, and you’ll likely find coverage of “The Ghost of C. C. White” in Lincoln, Nebraska. Well, I experienced two very, very strange events in that building back in 1970, and at the time I had no idea that other people had also experienced high strangeness there.

I’m a very logical, science-minded kind of guy, so I like to pigeon-hole events into a range of probabilities. My two experiences definitely slip over the edge into way-beyond-normal-coincidence in my probability ratings! But I’ll let you be the judge of that. Read on.

Late at Night

I was dating Jeanie in early ’70, and we would sneak into the old three-floor brick and wood C.C. White building on the campus of Nebraska Wesleyan late at night to visit and yes, to smooch a little. The first event happened on the lowest floor, in a big open room with little furniture and several large, ancient pictures hanging on the walls. We were chatting and giggling, always keeping an ear out for any campus security guards that might come around.

In the middle of a conversation, Jeanie suddenly asked me “what was that?”, and we both froze in place, listening intently for a few seconds. I didn’t hear whatever she heard. Suddenly, without any warning, a huge picture on the wall about 20 feet from us…
